May 01, Kathmandu - Nepali Congress Chairman Gagan Kumar Thapa has raised concerns over the government’s approach to governance and its adherence to democratic principles.
Addressing a program organized by the Nepal Trade Union Congress on International Workers’ Day (May Day), Thapa urged the government to respect legal procedures and processes.
He specifically criticized the government's recent ordinance related to the Constitutional Council, alleging it seeks to undermine the balance of constitutional institutions. Thapa emphasized that since the Constitutional Council is a part of the state structure and includes the opposition, attempts to reform its composition are undemocratic.
On the occasion of Labor Day, Thapa reaffirmed that the rights to trade unions and collective bargaining, guaranteed by Articles 17 and 34 of the Constitution, cannot be arbitrarily taken away. Recognizing the need for broad reforms within the trade union movement, he assured that the Nepali Congress remains committed to protecting workers’ rights and interests.
